Believe, Belong, and Become

Finally, all of you should be of one mind, full of sympathy toward each other, loving one another with tender hearts and humble minds. Don't repay evil for evil. Don't retaliate when people say unkind things about you. Instead, pay them back with a blessing. That is what God wants you to do, and he will bless you for it. 1 Peter 3:8-9 NLT

Webster defines community as “a unified body of individuals,” and it was the American anthropologist, Margaret Mead, who said, “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it’s the only thing that has.”

The truth of the matter is that we spend more time with those with whom we work than with our own family and friends. So we can help to build a community, one built on the foundations of love, respect, trust and integrity. As ambassadors of God in our workplace, we are commissioned to expand God’s kingdom here on earth.

It is John Maxwell who said it best: “Because of our fallen human state, everybody has three fundamental needs:

  • To believe: All human hearts need to have faith in something or Someone.
  • To belong: All human hearts need to experience community and family.
  • To become: All human hearts need to grow, stretch, and reach their potential.” (John Maxwell Leadership Bible, NKJV, p. 1375)

Each of us plays a critical role in our various communities and it is our responsibility to assist in building the best community possible. For each of us wants and needs to believe, to belong, and to become. How can we help one another achieve the best community?
